Chanel Kennebrew was born in Inglewood, California in the summer of 1982. Being a child of a musician father and fashion designer mother, she early adopted both parent's appreciation for design and music. Chanel's main passion and occupation is graphic design and photo-based illustration. From an early age she would spend hours illustrating cartoons from television. At the age of 13 she started drawing popular musicians and selling them to her class mates. At 15 she moved from Southern California to Denver and was accepted to the Denver school of the arts. That's when she started to developed her photography skills and was introduced to the broader world of commercial and political art. In 2000 she moved from Denver to pursue a BFA in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. While studying in Toronto she was able to cut her design teeth by working with local musicians, stores and print publications doing freelance graphic design and photography. It was through this work she gained valuable experience in creating logotypes, advertising, packaging and illustrations. Chanel relocated to Brooklyn NY in 2005, accepting the position of Art Director and the kitschy Fredflare.com. Thus beginning her career in New York. She's worked on numerous projects since. Chanel is currently spends her days doing freelance creative work and running Junkprints. What's Junkprints? Well, it's an umbrella for the she makes. It's smarter than fashion, less pretentious than art, looser than design and good for the soul. Junkprints started out as her surface exploration of race and gender in the media. Junkprints is a response to mainstream media's exclusion and skewed representation of the rest of the American people. Junkprints was created as a lifestyle choice put into place to attempt to create a balance of perspectives. It's ethical, sustainable, tongue in cheek and socially accountable. She's usually a one-person operation, and finds it funny to speak about herself in third person but that is generally the way these bio things are done. Contact me here, chanel@junkprints.com...but first read this. I make all the stuff you see on my site, design, print sew, code, ship the orders etc. Yep you read that right I MAKE THIS SHIT.
